Install

No release zip yet. The repository archive installs, but the folder name will carry the branch suffix and updates will not flow:

wp plugin install https://github.com/ziv-was-here/zwh-modernize-images/archive/refs/heads/main.zip

Ships its own WordPress updater (built-in updater), so new versions show up under Dashboard → Updates.

Convert images to WebP format, manage featured image sizes, and enable SVG file uploads with advanced controls.

Description

ZWH Modernize Images is a WordPress plugin that automatically converts images to the modern WebP format upon upload, provides granular control over featured image sizes per post type, enables SVG file uploads, and includes intelligent skipping for images marked with "nowebp" in the filename.

Features

  • WebP Conversion: Automatically convert uploaded images to WebP format for better compression and performance
  • Quality Control: Adjustable WebP quality level (0-100) to balance file size and visual quality
  • Smart Skipping: Images with "nowebp" in the filename are uploaded without conversion
  • SVG Support: Enable SVG file uploads (normally blocked by WordPress)
  • Featured Image Sizes: Set custom featured image dimensions per post type
  • Flexible Configuration: Full admin settings page with all options
  • Multiple Conversion Methods: Uses ImageMagick if available, falls back to PHP GD
  • Original File Management: Option to delete original files after successful conversion

Installation

  1. Upload the zwh-modernize-images folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory
  2. Activate the plugin through the 'Plugins' menu in WordPress
  3. Go to Settings > Modernize Images to configure options

Requirements

  • PHP 7.4 or higher
  • Either ImageMagick (imagick PHP extension) OR PHP GD library for WebP conversion

Configuration

Visit Settings > Modernize Images to:

  • Enable/disable automatic WebP conversion
  • Adjust WebP compression quality
  • Choose whether to delete original files
  • Set featured image sizes for each post type

How It Works

  • On Upload: When an image is uploaded, the plugin checks:

    1. Is WebP conversion enabled? (Yes → continue)
    2. Is it an SVG file? (Yes → skip conversion, just upload)
    3. Does the filename contain "nowebp"? (Yes → skip conversion, upload as-is)
    4. Can it be converted? (Yes → convert to WebP, update upload)
  • Featured Images: The plugin automatically registers featured image sizes for:

    • Posts (default: 1200x800)
    • Pages (default: 1200x800)
    • Custom Post Types (if they support featured images)
  • SVG Uploads: SVGs are added to the allowed MIME types and can be uploaded by any user with media upload capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will WebP conversion slow down uploads?

Conversion happens asynchronously during the upload process. Processing time depends on image size and server resources, typically adding 1-3 seconds per image.

What if my server doesn't have ImageMagick?

The plugin automatically falls back to PHP's GD library, which is included with most PHP installations.

Can I exclude specific images from WebP conversion?

Yes! Simply include "nowebp" in the filename (e.g., my-nowebp-image.jpg).

Will SVG uploads be secure?

SVGs are uploaded like any other media file. WordPress file permissions still apply. Always keep WordPress and plugins updated.

Can I change featured image sizes later?

Yes, you can change them anytime in Settings > Modernize Images. The sizes apply to new uploads; existing images won't be resized.
