Install

No release zip yet. The repository archive installs, but the folder name will carry the branch suffix and updates will not flow:

wp plugin install https://github.com/staceyzav/simply-news/archive/refs/heads/main.zip

Ships its own WordPress updater (built-in updater), so new versions show up under Dashboard → Updates.

A clean, token-aware post feed shortcode. Three-column grid with photo, category, title, and read more link. Zero dependencies.

Description

Simply News outputs a responsive post feed grid using a simple shortcode. It works on any WordPress theme and automatically picks up your theme's registered colors and fonts via WordPress global styles — no configuration required.

Shortcode usage:

[simply_news]

[simply_news limit="6" columns="3" category="news" read_more="Read Now" heading="Latest News"]

Attributes:

  • limit — number of posts to show (default: from Settings)
  • columns — grid columns (default: from Settings)
  • category — filter by category slug
  • read_more — CTA link text (default: from Settings)
  • heading — optional heading displayed above the feed

Token support:

Simply News reads --client-* CSS custom properties from the Simply Design token system. On any theme using WordPress global styles, it automatically inherits the theme's primary color and font. Falls back to clean neutral styles on any other theme.

Installation

  1. Upload the plugin folder to /wp-content/plugins/
  2. Activate the plugin through the Plugins menu
  3. Add [simply_news] to any page or post
  4. Optionally configure defaults under Settings → Simply News

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work with my theme?

Yes. Simply News has zero dependencies and works on any WordPress theme. It picks up your theme's registered fonts and colors automatically via WordPress global styles.

Can I show posts from a specific category?

Yes — use the category attribute with the category slug: [simply_news category="news"]

Can I use it multiple times on one page?

Yes. Each shortcode instance is independent and can have its own settings.
