Installation

Single-Site Installation

  1. Upload the plugin files to /wp-content/plugins/alt-text-auditor/
  2. Activate the plugin through the 'Plugins' menu in WordPress
  3. Navigate to Media > Alt Text Auditor and select the Audit tab to run your first scan

Multisite (Network) Installation

  1. Upload the plugin files to /wp-content/plugins/wp-alttext-auditor/
  2. Network Activate the plugin through the 'Network Admin > Plugins' menu
  3. Database tables will be automatically created for all sites in the network
  4. Network admins can view network-wide statistics at Network Admin > Alt-Text Audit
  5. Site admins can manage their site's alt-text at Media > Alt Text Auditor on each site

Usage

Site-Wide Audit (Recommended First Step)

  1. Go to Media > Alt Text Auditor in your WordPress admin and select the Audit tab

  2. Click "Scan Published Content" to scan all posts and pages for images

  3. Click "Scan Media Library" to scan all uploaded images

  4. View the results:

    • Overview Tab: See statistics cards with total images, missing alt-text counts, and percentages
    • Missing Alt-Text Tab: Browse all images missing alt-text with thumbnails and links to fix them
    • By User Tab: See which team members have the most missing alt-text (great for training!)

  5. Use the filter form to narrow down results:

    • Filter by specific user to see their missing alt-text
    • Filter by content source (Post Content or Media Library)
    • Filter by post type (post, page, custom post types)
    • Search by image filename
    • Click "Reset Filters" to clear all filters

  6. Fix missing alt-text quickly:

    • Click "Add Alt Text" button next to any missing image
    • Enter alt-text in the inline editor
    • Click "Save" to update - the row will be removed and statistics updated

  7. Export results:

    • Click "Export to CSV" to download all filtered results
    • CSV includes: Image Source, Found In, Post Type, Content Type, User, Scan Date
    • Opens in Excel with UTF-8 encoding support
    • Formula injection protection included

  8. Enable automatic scanning (optional):

    • Check "Enable automatic daily scanning" on the Overview tab
    • Scans run automatically once per day via WordPress cron
    • View next scheduled scan time below the checkbox
    • Disable anytime by unchecking the box

  9. Statistics are cached for 24 hours - use "Refresh Statistics" to update immediately

Quick Edit in Media Library

  1. Go to Media > Library in your WordPress admin
  2. You'll see a new "Alt Text" column in the media library table
  3. For image files, click in the alt-text field to edit
  4. Type your desired alt-text - changes save automatically after you stop typing
  5. Visual indicators show when content is being saved, successfully saved, or if there's an error

Dedicated Alt Text Manager

  1. Go to Media > Alt Text Auditor in your WordPress admin and select the Manager tab

  2. View all your media library images with thumbnails

  3. Use the filters to find specific images:

    • Select "Missing Alt-Text" to see only images that need attention
    • Type in the search box to filter by filename or existing alt-text (live search)
    • Sort by clicking column headers (filename, status)

  4. Edit alt-text inline with auto-save

  5. Status column shows at a glance which images need attention (green checkmark or red warning)

Multisite Network Admin Usage

For WordPress Multisite installations, network administrators have additional capabilities:

  1. View Network-Wide Dashboard:

    • Go to Network Admin > Alt-Text Audit
    • See aggregated statistics across all sites in the network
    • View compliance percentages for each site
    • Quickly identify sites that need attention

  2. Network Settings:

    • Go to Network Admin > Alt-Text Audit > Settings
    • Configure auto-activation for new sites
    • View network-wide plugin information

  3. Per-Site Management:

    • Each site maintains its own audit database
    • Site administrators can run scans and fix alt-text independently
    • Network admins can access any site's dashboard via the network overview

  4. Adding New Sites:

    • When auto-activation is enabled, new sites automatically get audit tables
    • Network admins can manually activate for specific sites if needed

Technical Details

Database Schema

The plugin creates a custom table wp_alttext_audit_results to store scan results:

  • Tracks images from both post content and media library
  • Stores user attribution (post author/uploader)
  • Indexes for fast querying by user, content type, and alt-text status
