A simple WordPress plugin that lets administrators reorder all post types (custom or built-in) and all taxonomies (custom or built-in) by drag and drop.

Features

  • Drag-and-drop ordering on any post-type list screen (edit.php)
  • Drag-and-drop ordering on any taxonomy term screen (edit-tags.php)
  • Works for custom post types and custom taxonomies automatically
  • Order is saved to menu_order (posts) and term meta (terms) and applied to both the admin list and front-end queries
  • Admin only — gated by the manage_options capability, with nonce-protected AJAX endpoints
  • No settings page, no dependencies (uses the jQuery UI Sortable bundled with WordPress)

Installation

  1. Copy drag-drop-order.php into wp-content/plugins/drag-drop-order/, or zip the folder and upload it via Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
  2. Activate Drag & Drop Order from the Plugins screen.

Usage

  • Posts: open any post-type list, grab a row, and drag it into place.
  • Terms: open any taxonomy (Categories, Tags, or a custom taxonomy) and drag rows into place.

Ordering is saved per page of the list table using the current "items per page" setting (Screen Options). Clicking a sortable column header still overrides the custom order, as expected.

Notes

  • For hierarchical taxonomies (e.g. Categories), dragging is reliable among siblings but is not intended for re-parenting.
  • Front-end listing queries are reordered by default. Since unset items share menu_order = 0 and fall back to date, nothing changes until you start reordering.
