OpenBrief AI is an open-source, human-reviewed research and intelligence brief generator for WordPress.

It uses OpenAI web search to discover relevant material for a configurable subject and reporting period, fetches original pages, removes repeated reporting, extracts structured evidence, consolidates evolving developments, generates forward scenarios, and prepares a concise editorial brief for human review.

The plugin does not require a predefined source list and never publishes automatically.

Core workflow

1. Define a research subject, search languages, research tracks, evidence rules, and model routing.
2. Start a manual run for a selected date range.
3. OpenBrief searches the public web by research track.
4. Original pages are fetched and date-checked.
5. Duplicate and syndicated reporting is reduced before extraction.
6. Events, claims, relationships, entities, and leading indicators are extracted with Structured Outputs.
7. Related updates are consolidated into current-state storylines.
8. A short editorial brief and 30-day scenarios are generated.
9. Editors review evidence, QA findings, and forecasts.
10. The report can be published as HTML, emailed, and exported to PDF.

Principles

• Search discovers; original pages provide evidence.
• Repetition is not corroboration.
• Primary evidence is preferred for material claims.
• Conflicting evidence is preserved rather than flattened.
• Forecasts are probabilistic and remain subject to evaluation.
• Editors retain final publication authority.
• Existing WordPress content and taxonomies are not modified.

Requirements

• WordPress 6.5 or newer
• PHP 8.1 or newer
• PHP extensions: mbstring, DOM/XML, and Sodium or OpenSSL
• An OpenAI API key with access to the Responses API and web search
• Optional: Dompdf for reliable multilingual PDF output

Installation

1. Download the release ZIP.
2. In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin.
3. Activate OpenBrief AI.
4. Open OpenBrief AI → Settings.
5. Add an OpenAI API key or define OPENBRIEF_OPENAI_API_KEY in wp-config.php.
6. Configure a research subject, search languages, research tracks, coverage framework, and delivery settings.
7. Start a manual run.

Data and upgrade safety

OpenBrief uses additive database migrations. Updating or deactivating the plugin does not remove runs, reviews, drafts, published reports, forecasts, evidence, or settings.

Data is removed only during uninstall and only when the explicit uninstall-deletion option is enabled.

Manual data-management actions are available for rejected events, discarded articles, raw article text, and completed evidence archives.

Privacy and site isolation

• The API key is encrypted at rest when stored in WordPress.
• Source text and report data are sent to OpenAI only when a run is executed.
• The plugin creates only its own report post type and plugin-owned database tables.
• It does not edit existing posts, pages, taxonomies, slugs, SEO metadata, or external knowledge graphs.

Status

This repository is an early public beta. Use a staging site for evaluation before production deployment.
