★ 1stars

Install

Download source zip No release zip yet

This is the repository archive. It installs, but the folder name will carry the branch suffix and updates will not flow.

Install straight from GitHub with WP-CLI:

wp plugin install https://github.com/cronkite-asu/wp-rss-news-ticker/archive/refs/heads/main.zip
No built-in updater. New versions won't appear under Dashboard → Updates. Install new releases yourself, or let Git Updater track the repository.

A WordPress plugin that publishes a lightweight RSS feed of short headlines. Editors can maintain local ticker items in WordPress and optionally prepend headlines retrieved from the Associated Press Media API.

The plugin provides the feed data; it does not render an animated ticker in a theme by itself.

Features

  • Custom RSS feed with a configurable feed name
  • Simple editorial interface for adding and removing local headlines
  • Optional Associated Press headline integration
  • AP product ID, API key, intro text, and result-count settings
  • Fifteen-minute transient caching for AP responses

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.0 or newer
  • PHP 7.2 or newer
  • An AP Newsroom account and Media API entitlement for AP headlines

Local headlines do not require AP credentials.

Installation and configuration

  1. Copy the repository to wp-content/plugins/rss-news-ticker.

  2. Activate RSS News Ticker.

  3. Open Settings → RSS Ticker and choose the feed name. The default is ticker.

  4. Add local headlines from the RSS Ticker admin page.

  5. If needed, enable the AP feed and enter an entitled product ID and API key.

  6. Visit the feed at:

    https://example.com/feed/ticker

Replace ticker with the configured feed name.

If a new feed URL returns a 404, save Settings → Permalinks once to refresh WordPress rewrite rules.

Security and operations

The AP API key is stored as a WordPress option. Restrict administrator access, protect database backups, and do not commit production credentials to this repository. Remote AP availability and account entitlements are outside the plugin's control; verify the local-headline fallback for your use case.

Development

Install the PHP development dependencies with Composer:

composer install

The WordPress.org-style README.txt remains the package metadata file; keep its version and compatibility fields synchronized with the plugin header when releasing.
