Install

No release zip yet. The repository archive installs, but the folder name will carry the branch suffix and updates will not flow:

wp plugin install https://github.com/belvast-innovation/wp-checkpoint/archive/refs/heads/main.zip

Backup, migration and safe updates for WordPress. Restores are always free, and every change can be undone.

🚧 Early development — not ready for production use yet.

What it does

  • Backup & migrate complete sites of any size, in chunks that work on shared hosting.
  • Restore without limits — no size caps, no paywall on restoring.
  • Open archive format — standard zip/tar with a JSON manifest; you can restore by hand without the plugin.
  • Checkpoints before risky changes — updates, search & replace and rollbacks can be undone.
  • Conflict troubleshooting — find the plugin that breaks your site without affecting visitors.
  • Import from other backup plugins, starting with .wpress archives.

Documentation

Full documentation, including the open archive format specification, will be published on wpcheckpoint.com before the first public release.

Development

Requirements: PHP 7.4+, Composer 2, Node.js 20+, Docker. Clone into a folder named wp-checkpoint (wp-env mounts the plugin under that name):

git clone https://github.com/Belvast-Innovation/WP-Checkpoint.git wp-checkpoint

Then install the tooling and run the checks:

composer install # PHPCS, PHPStan, PHPUnit (development only, nothing ships in the plugin)
npm install # @wordpress/env
composer lint # WordPress Coding Standards + PHP 7.4 compatibility
composer analyse # PHPStan
composer test:unit # pure PHP unit tests, no WordPress needed

The integration tests run inside a WordPress install managed by wp-env, so Docker must be running:

npx wp-env start # first start downloads images; site at http://localhost:8888 (admin / password)
npm run test:integration # runs `composer test:integration` inside the tests container
npm run test:integration:multisite # same suite with WordPress installed as a network
npm run check:plugin # builds build/wp-checkpoint from .distignore and runs Plugin Check on it
npx wp-env stop

npx wp-env run cli wp ... runs WP-CLI against the development site, npx wp-env destroy throws the containers away. Continuous integration runs the same commands on PHP 7.4, 8.1, 8.3 and 8.4 (integration tests on 8.3).
