Lets you add a meta description to posts, pages and custom post types in WordPress. If you fill in a description, it will be included in the <head> of your page as a meta tag for search engines. If you leave it blank, no tag is added.
Features
- Add a "Search Engine Description" field to posts, pages, and custom post types (see below for how to add support for custom post types).
- The description field has a live character counter and is limited to 160 characters (the recommended maximum for SEO).
- Outputs
<meta name="description" ...>only if a description is provided. If you leave the field blank, no meta tag is added to the page. - No settings, minimal and easy to use.
Supported Languages
This plugin is available in the following languages:
- English (default)
- Spanish (es_ES)
- French (fr_FR)
- German (de_DE)
- Dutch (nl_NL)
- Italian (it_IT)
- Portuguese (pt_PT)
- Chinese (zh_CN)
- Japanese (ja)
Installation
- Download or clone this repository.
- Upload the
wp-minimalist-meta-descriptionfolder to your WordPress/wp-content/plugins/directory. - Activate the plugin via the WordPress admin dashboard.
Usage
- Edit any post, page, or supported custom post type. You'll see a field labeled "Search Engine Description".
- Enter your meta description and save. There is a live character counter below the field, and the description is limited to 160 characters (the recommended maximum for SEO).
- If you leave the description blank, no meta tag will be added to the page. If this happens, search engines will generate their own description for your page, and you will not be able to influence what users see in search results.
- View your page source: the meta tag appears in the
<head>only if a description is set.
Custom Post Type Support
By default, the meta box is added to posts and pages. You can add support for custom post types using the wpmmd_supported_post_types filter:
// Add a single custom post type
add_filter('wpmmd_supported_post_types', function($types) {
$types[] = 'your_custom_post_type';
return $types;
});
// Add multiple custom post types
add_filter('wpmmd_supported_post_types', function($types) {
$types = array_merge($types, ['portfolio', 'event', 'product']);
return $types;
});
